President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. launched the Pier 88 seaport project, dubbed as Cebu’s first “smart port”, on May 27.

Pier 88 is a three-phase port-commercial development project located in Poblacion, Liloan, Cebu and developed by the Topline Group of Companies in partnership with Pier88 Ventures, Inc.

The project, which officially broke ground in March 2019 and inaugurated in 2021, is envisioned to become an alternative route for commuters and a new economic gateway for northern Cebu.

In his speech during the launch, Marcos said the seaport project will not only be good for Liloan and nearby islands in Cebu, but also for the entire country.

“Today, we put in place a very important piece of that puzzle; that puzzle that we are trying to put together so that our connectivity, not only amongst the islands of the Philippines, but even amongst our international friends and visitors and tourists, is strengthened and made easier and more accessible,” Marcos said.

The project is expected to bring enhanced connectivity and mobility, serving as a marine highway linking Liloan to Lapu-Lapu City, as well as to Bohol and Leyte.

Pier 88 will be used by Topline Seabus, which can accommodate 150 passengers, is fuel efficient, and will be manned by only four people. Topline Seabus will be serving two routes: Liloan-Mactan route which will dock at Mactan Wharf near Mactan Export Processing Zone, and Liloan-Cebu City route which will dock at Cebu City Pier 3.

With Topline Seabus, trips from Liloan to Cebu City and Mactan Island, and vice versa, will be shortened to 30 to 45 minutes from the usual two hours.

Dubbed as smart port, Pier 88 will integrate digital technology in its operations by using QR codes and a radio frequency identification-ready (RFID) system to be integrated in a mobile application, providing passengers convenience while traveling.

According to the provincial government of Cebu, OceanJet, Super Shuttle Ferry, and Aznar Shipping have already come on board to offer daily trips from Liloan to Poro town in Camotes. Ceres buses have also been issued permits to ply the Cebu City–Liloan–Camotes route via Pier 88.
