OOCL, Hyundai, T.S. Lines leading carriers from January to April

THE Manila-Hong Kong container trade declined 8.23% to 3,882 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) for the first four months of the year from 4,230 TEUs in the same period last year, according to latest data from the Association of International Shipping Lines (AISL).

AISL members ship the bulk of the country’s container trade.

Hong Kong-based carrier Orient Overseas Container Lines (OOCL) accounted for the biggest volume in the trade lane handling 943 TEUs or 24.3% of the total. The number of containers is 33% down from 1,407 TEUs handled in the comparative period last year.

In second spot is Hyundai Marine Co which shipped 502 TEUs, more than double last year’s 248 TEUs. The Korean carrier’s market share was 12.9%.

Ranked third and handling 12.4% of the total volume is another Hong Kong-based carrier, T.S. Lines. It transported 480 TEUs this year, 81% more than the 265 TEUs in the same period in 2009.

Occupying fourth place is Mariana Express. With a market share of 11.4%, the carrier shipped 444 TEUs, up 5.4% from 421 TEUs in January to April 2009.

Regional Container Lines (RCL) came in fifth. It accounted for 10% of the Manila-Hong Kong volume with 390 TEUs, down 54.6% from last year’s 859 TEUs.

In sixth place is Cheng Lie, which recorded a 6.74% dip in volume to 332 TEUs from 356 TEUs. Its market share was 8.6%.

Rounding up the top 10 carriers for the trade are Goldstar, with 248 TEUs vs 9 TEUs for a market share of 6.4%; Hub Line, 199 vs 151 TEUs, 5.13% share; Wan Hai, 141 TEUs vs 119 TEUs, 3.6%; and Evergreen, 68 TEUs vs 38 TEUs, 1.8%.

For the reefer trade, K-Line emerged as the top carrier shipping 11 TEUs followed by OOCL with 8 TEUs; Cheng Lie, 6 TEUs; and Hyundai, Evergreen and COSCO, 2 TEUs, 2 TEUs and 1 TEU, respectively.
