Harbor Star Shipping Services, Inc. (HSSSI) successfully salvaged on September 23 Panamanian-registered bulk carrier Ambition Journey, which ran aground in Eastern Samar last August.

The 189-meter vessel suffered engine failure and ran aground on August 2 in Sulangan Island in Guiuan town, Eastern Samar while enroute to China from Homonhon Island.

The refloated Ambition Journey is currently anchored in Philippine waters and will be towed to a yet-to-be determined shipyard for further repairs, HSSSI said in a regulatory disclosure.

HSSSI said it continues to coordinate with the Philippine Coast Guard and the appropriate local government units to ensure orderly departure of Ambition Journey and the protection of the marine environment around it.

HSSSI and US-based T&T Salvage were earlier awarded the contract to salvage Ambition Journey. Salvaging works included refloating the vessel, unloading its cargo of 49,550 metric tons of nickel ore, rendering oil spill control and cleanup operations, and towing the vessel to the designated shipyard for repairs.

HSSSI in 2020 earned P109 million from salvage operations, which represented 8% of its total revenues for the year. For the first half of 2021, HSSSI recognized salvage income amounting to P29.4 million for a 2019 operation.

Aside from salvage operations, HSSSI’s maritime services include harbor assistance, lighterage, towing, marine construction, repair and maintenance works, oil and chemical spill response, diving and underwater services, and ship and crew management.
