Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista is looking at Gatwick Airport in the United Kingdom as a template for operations at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

Bautista accompanied President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. during his visit at Gatwick Airport on May 5 to explore best practices being implemented at the London air hub with the aim of applying them in the country’s major gateways.

Bautista initiated the inspection, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said in a statement. The visit was made at the sidelines of Marcos’ UK trip to attend the coronation of King Charles III.

London Gatwick, also known as Gatwick Airport, is the UK’s second largest airport. More than 40 airlines fly from the airport to over 150 short-haul and more than 45 long-haul destinations.

Marcos also met with officials from the Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP)—one of the world’s largest infrastructure investors in London, and the company that co-manages Gatwick Airport and discussed the airport’s exceptional infrastructure, cutting-edge technology and operations.

As a result, DOTr said GIP has conveyed its commitment to invest in the country to help in enhancing efficiency and effectiveness of the transportation system.

GIP is part of Manila International Airport Consortium, which recently submitted a P100 billion unsolicited proposal to operate and manage NAIA.

Other MIAC members are Aboitiz InfraCapital, Inc.; AC Infrastructure Holdings Corp.; Asia’s Emerging Dragon Corp.; Alliance Global – Infracorp Development, Inc.; and Filinvest Development Corp.; JG Summit Infrastructure Holdings Corp.

DOTr and Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) will review MIAC’s proposal, while also continuing ongoing development of a solicited procurement option.

Bautista earlier said DOTr is working with the Asian Development Bank and the Public Private Partnership Center for the completion of the terms of reference for the bidding of the contract to operate and maintain NAIA.
