At the induc-tion of SCMAP officials last Feb. 10, 2012 Presi-dent Ike Castillo promised that 2012 would be different, ending his talk with “But it is going to be Different in 2012!”.

Last Feb. 23 SCMAP held its first General Membership Meeting for 2012. In line with the promise, it was a different look, different content GMM. It was dubbed “Supply Chain in a Day Conference 2012”.

Fittingly a new venue was engaged for the conference, the plush amphitheater of the MK Tan Hall at the Bayanihan Center in the Unilab compound in Kapitolyo, Pasig City.

Basically the conference was a set of talks by leading SCMAP talents, on current and relevant topics:

• Group Procurement: Ideas, Knowledge, Experience, by Galvin Lagera, AVP Supply Chain, Asset Protection and Management, PLDT

• Transport and Distribution: Making a Difference in Challenging Times!, by Gabriel R Patag, SCM, Operations Development Mgr, TNT Express Worldwide Phils.

• Reengineering in the Supply Chain, by Augusto A. Arguelles, Prof. Ateneo Graduate School of Business

• SCM HR: Managing Up & Down, How to Manage Your Team … and Your Boss, by Ike Castillo, President & COO, Fast Logistics, SCMAP President

• Benchmarking the Green Logistics Initiatives in Japan, by Evangeline Carino-Diche, AVP-Integrated Management Systems, Fast Logistics

• The Role of Logistics in the 21st Century (Consideration of Environmental Issues), by Engr, Chris Y. Borci, RME, HSE Manager, Zuellig Pharma Corp.

Gus Arguelles might sound like a new name in SCMAP, but in reality, he was one of the first ten persons with us, representing Eveready, when we founded DMAP, the forerunner of SCMAP, and held the first meeting in August 1989. And to complete the circle, Gus has recently joined SCMAP as an individual member.

Evangeline Diche and Chris Borci are two scholars sent by SCMAP to the AOTS Logistics Program on Green Logistics last January.

In addition to the above talks, relatively new SCMAP member Swiftstar Logistics Corp. sponsored the event and displayed their products. Presentor Kristine P. Santos gave presentations on their services on RFID technology and tracking.

SCMAP also released the second issue of Supply Chain Philippines magazine. SCMAP PRO and Director Arnel Gamboa, also serving as Supply Chain Phils. Editor-in-Chief, did a walk-through of the magazine and encouraged everybody to contribute ideas.

Lastly SCMAP Vice President Gabby Patag gave a reorientation for everybody and exhorted everyone to participate in SCMAP activities and contribute to the growth of SCMAP.

The One Day Conference, done for the first time ever, was a rousing success. Close to 100 participants attended, representing 39 companies. Credit goes to the movers led by Ike Castillo. Truly a team effort.

Coming up on SCMAP’s agenda is the Logistics Immersion Course (May 13-15). SCMAP is also reviewing its lineup of seminars.

But not to forget other concerns. No time to relax.

• Bunker surcharge proposed by shipping lines

• Anti truck overloading —stakeholders meeting Feb 29

• Meeting on rail transport, sponsored by AmCham

I am surprised by a news item on new bills concerning the need for a new maritime code!, even the formation of a technical working group to address this. It seems to me that it has not been too long ago that a new maritime act was passed. Have to look into this.
