Export-laden container trucks will be diverted temporarily to Gate 2 of Manila South Harbor starting April 1 while construction works at Gate 7 are being done, according to port operator Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI).

Bare trucks and those loaded with empty boxes can still enter Gate 7 but must use different lanes or booths, ATI said in a marketing circular dated March 30. Security personnel will be posted in these areas for guidance.

ATI said the construction works at Gate 7 are part of improvement plans at the port to better serve clients.

The port operator earlier said it has earmarked P5 billion of capital expenditure this year for the continuous upgrade of its major port gateways in Manila and Batangas.

Part of the investment program is the continuing expansion of yard and berth facilities at Manila South Harbor to enable it to handle growing container volumes and bigger ships deployed by freight carriers.

ATI said this would result in quicker and safer terminal turnaround time for port users and move the port operator closer to increasing the international trade gateway’s annual throughput capacity from 1.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units currently to nearly 2 million TEUs by 2024.

In 2021, cargo volumes at Manila South Harbor grew 3.9% year-on-year.
