The P252-million newly-rehabilitated Dumaguete (Sibulan) Airport and the P114-million new operations building of Dumaguete port were formally inaugurated today (March 11) by President Rodrigo Duterte.

The port operations building, which can also accommodate around 500 passengers, is expected to generate over P13 million in passenger terminal fees annually, Duterte said at the inauguration.

With the project’s completion, the need for proper monitoring of vessel arrivals and departures will be addressed, while providing passengers bound for nearby islands of Siquijor, Cebu, and Bohol with a modern passenger terminal building (PTB), according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr) in a statement.

The Dumaguete port project is part of 27 projects completed by the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) last year. Of the 27, 16 are for inauguration within the year. Some 36 port projects are ongoing, of which 15 are in Luzon, 12 in the Visayas, and nine in Mindanao.

The rehabilitation of Dumaguete Airport, meanwhile, included re-blocking of the apron, construction of two taxiways, expansion of the existing PTB, runway asphalt overlay and shoulder grade correction, and expansion of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines administrative building.

DOTr said the improvements upgraded the airport’s capability to accommodate heavier aircraft and increased the terminal’s passenger capacity from 330 to 450. The airport serves Negros Oriental and the neighboring Siquijor Island.

Dumaguete port and Dumaguete (Sibulan) Airport are gateways to Negros Oriental.
