The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) plans to construct three new bridges crossing Marikina River in the second half of 2022.

Procurement of civil works for the Marcos Highway-St. Mary Avenue Bridge, Homeowner’s Drive-A. Bonifacio Bridge, and Kabayani Street-Matandang Balara Bridge will be conducted by the first half. The bridges total 3,023.60 meters and are all under the Metro Manila Bridges Project.

Public Works Undersecretary for Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) Operations Emil Sadain said the agency is pushing for the immediate review/checking and approval of bidding documents to accelerate procurement activity timelines. This is in view of the upcoming May 2022 national elections and the ban on procurement activities coinciding with the 45-day campaign period between March 25 and May 8, 2022.

The draft bidding documents were prepared by the UPMO Bridges Management Cluster in partnership with detailed engineering design consultant Dasan Consultant Co., Ltd., in a joint venture with Dongsung Engineering Co., Ltd. and Kunhwa Engineering & Consulting Co., Ltd., and in association with DCCD Engineering Corp.

The bridges will be funded by an P8.8-billion loan from the Asian Development Bank signed on December 16, 2021.

The projects are aimed to provide alternative routes to decongest traffic, enhance transportation capacity of the Marikina River crossings, and accelerate the economic development of Marikina City and Quezon City.

The proposed bridges across Marikina River are included in the government’s Metro Manila Logistics Network Program. The program includes new bridges crossing Pasig River that were completed in the last third quarter of 2021. These are the locally funded Kalayaan Bridge of the Bonifacio Global City-Ortigas Center Link Road Project and the Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge funded by China grant. Also part of the program is the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge, which will be completed in 2022 and is also financed by the grant aid program of China.

The proposed two-lane pre-stressed box girder Marcos Highway-St. Mary Avenue Bridge (previously named J.P. Rizal St.-St. Mary Bridge) has a total length of 1,606.30 meters and an estimated project cost of P1.690 billion.

The 691-meter Homeowner’s Drive-A. Bonifacio Bridge (previously named J.P. Rizal St.-Lopez Jaena Bridge) has a cost estimate of P2.097 billion.

The planned 726.30-meter four-lane pre-stressed concrete extradosed-type Kabayani Street-Matandang Balara Bridge (previously named Marikina-Vista Real Bridge), meanwhile, is estimated to cost P2.641 billion.
