DOTr earmarks P600M for expansion of 7 airports

  • The Department of Transportation is allocating P600 million for expansion and upgrading of seven airports to boost tourism
  • Marinduque Airport Development Project will get the lion’s share of the budget with P291 million to be spent on a new asphalt layer of the runway and other works
  • The projects are among a P1 trillion basket of airport projects that the DOTr said would be completed in 2023.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is earmarking nearly P600 million for the expansion and upgrading of seven regional airports to boost travel and tourism.

In separate invitations to bid posted on November 5, DOTr sought interested bidders for the following development and expansion projects worth a total of P587.19 million:

  • Bicol International Airport in Legazpi City Project – P94.14 million for the construction of a box culvert system and an open canal
  • Catanduanes Airport – P28.94 million for the improvement of the access road
  • Cauayan Airport in Isabela – P29.07 million to broaden its tarmac, widen its vehicular parking area and set up fences
  • Dumaguete Airport – P48.29 million to correct its runway grade
  • General Santos International Airport – P47.27 million for the construction of a covered passenger drop-off site and expansion of the vehicular parking area
  • M’lang Airport Development Project – P48.48 million for the construction of a landside area and construction of an open canal
  • Marinduque Airport Development Project – P291 million for the construction of a new asphalt overlay of the runway, correction of shoulder grade and construction of the DOTr’s Project Management Office.

The airport projects will be funded through DOTr’s general appropriations for 2022.

The opening of bids for the Bicol, Catanduanes, and Marinduque airport projects will be on November 28, and for the rest on November 29.

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista earlier said the government and the private sector would complete close to P1 trillion worth of aviation projects in 2023 to support the recovery of travel and tourism.

Nine major regional airport projects under the public-private partnership scheme are in the pipeline, including Bohol-Panglao International Airport, Laguindingan International Airport, Bicol International Airport, Iloilo International Airport, Puerto Princesa International Airport, Davao International Airport, Bacolod-Silay International Airport, Kalibo International Airport, and Siargao Airport.
