Clark International Airport (CRK) has been named one of the finalists in this year’s Prix Versailles World Finale, a prestigious annual international prize that recognizes the best architecture and design projects in the world.

CRK will be competing in the category Prix Versailles Airports 2021 with five other selected airport projects that have been completed in 2020. The others are the Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt in Germany, Athens International Airport in Greece, Hazrat Sultan International Airport in Kazakhstan, New Plymouth Airport in New Zealand, and LaGuardia Airport-Terminal B in the United States.

Aside from airports, this year’s finalists include six university campuses, six passenger stations, and six sports facilities selected from hundreds of projects completed in 2020.

“The World Selections pay tribute to the qualities of innovation, creativity, reflection of local, natural and cultural heritage, and ecological efficiency, as well as the values of social interaction and participation which the United Nations holds in high regard,” the French-based organization said in a statement.

The 2021 World Judges Panel, whose members will be identified at a later date, will name the winners from amongst the finalists. The winners will be unveiled in late November or early December 2021.

In September 2020, the shell of CRK’s new passenger terminal building (PTB) was completed by the joint-venture contractor Megawide Construction Corp. Also completed were other landside developments at the airport.

In January 2021, the PTB was handed to private operator Luzon International Premier Airport Development Corp. (LIPAD), which is fitting out the interior requirement of the new terminal. LIPAD earlier said it tapped global design firm Populous as lead interior designer for the new PTB.

The terminal’s world-class architectural design uses new technologies to support a seamless travel experience for passengers and is seen to help cement Clark airport’s position as “Asia’s Next Premier Gateway.”

With a floor area of 110,000 square meters, the new terminal will be able to accommodate up to 8 million passengers annually, in addition to the 4.2 million passengers that the existing terminal can handle.

The second PTB, located 1.5 kilometers from the first, has four floor levels and 18 aero bridges or passenger boarding bridges.

The new PTB is envisioned to spur economic progress and development in Central Luzon, and ease congestion at the country’s main gateway, Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

According to the Department of Transportation, the new PTB is set to be fully operational in September 2021.
