The Department of Transportation and Cebu Port Authority (CPA) inaugurated on November 26 the recently completed P989-million port expansion project at Berths 7 to 10 of Cebu baseport in Cebu City.

The expansion project included the construction of a 40-meter-wide and 310-meter-long reinforced concrete deck and back-up/operation area, a port lighting system, and complete mooring and docking facilities.

Also built were gantry crane rails to accommodate the projected increase of gantry cranes at the port and shorten turnaround time for cargo operations.

In a statement, CPA said the newly expanded port is seen to accommodate increased vessel traffic, improve cargo-handling capacity, and enhance the overall port productivity of Cebu baseport, one of the busiest and main gateways in the country.

With a budget of P339 million, Phase 1 of the expansion project was started in August 2017 and completed and operationalized in January 2019. The P600-million Phase 2 began in February 2020 and turned over to CPA in October 2021 following the completion of contract with UKC Builders, Inc.

Also on November 26, CPA announced that construction of the P336.115-million San Fernando Port Project in Brgy. Poblacion, San Fernando will finally begin in January 2022 after WTG Construction and Development Corp. won the project bid. The project is expected to be completed in May 2023.
