The Bureau of Customs is deploying additional x-ray machines in Cebu and Cagayan de Oro ports, as well as at Boracay International Airport, as part of its mandate to facilitate trade and protect the border against contraband.

One unit of Nuctech mobile container x-ray scanner was deployed by the BOC Xray Inspection Project (XIP) in Cebu port, while another will be deployed in Cagayan de Oro port, the bureau said in a statement.

BOC said the high-performance scanning capability of the mobile container X-ray machine allows faster scanning through its pass-through mode feature, assuring precise inspection of all containerized cargoes.

One Astrophysics fixed check-in baggage scanner and two Astrophysics hand-carry baggage scanners will be deployed at Boracay International Airport to aid in detecting smuggled goods concealed in baggage as the gateway prepares to open to international flights in December.

XIP continues to train its personnel to upgrade their intelligence and enforcement operations capabilities.

BOC had said earlier that XIP scanned 209,030 containers and collected P33.04 million of additional duties and taxes in the first quarter of 2022. In 2021, XIP scanned 65% more containers and collected P113.72 million of additional revenues.

BOC noted that its scanning performance efficiency increased 14% in the first quarter this year compared with the same period last year.

In 2021, four mobile x-ray machines were successfully deployed in various BOC collection districts, contributing to the continuous improvement of XIP’s performance, the bureau said.
