Businessman Eduardo Jose Aliño has been sworn in by President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr as the new Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) chairman and administrator on Jan 12.

Aliño takes the place of Jonathan Tan, who earlier in the day resigned and then took his oath of office as undersecretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government. Tan, a former mayor of Pandacan, Antique, stayed a total of eight months as SBMA chief.

Aliño is president and chairman of the S.T.A.R Services Group. The Group’s website said the company focuses on integrated supply chain services centering around port operations for bulk and break-bulk cargo specifically catering to the agricultural industry. The company has locations in Subic Bay, Pampanga, Batangas, and Cagayan De Oro, among others.

The S.T.A.R. Group’s flagship company, Subic Bay Freeport Grain Terminal Services Inc. (Subic Grain), was established in 2000 as a locator in Subic Bay Freeport Zone. Together with its sister company Mega Subic Terminal Services Inc. operating at the Naval Supply Depot, the group handles about 2.5 million metric tonnes of grain in the Port of Subic annually.

Aliño is president and chairman of both Subic Grain and Mega Subic.

Meanwhile, SBMA Office of the Deputy Administrator for Corporate Communications officer-in-charge Armina Llamas in a farewell message on the same day thanked Tan, whose appointment was signed on April 28, 2023.

“In behalf of the men and women of the SBMA, I convey our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for the hardwork and dedication rendered by our beloved Jonathan Dioso Tan as SBMA chairman and administrator, who had been part of the SBMA family for the past eight months,” Llamas said on her Facebook page.

“We wish you all the best in your new journey,” Llamas added.
