The Bureau of Customs (BOC) Port of Subic apprehended 30 twenty-footer containers of misdeclared sugar from Hong Kong with an estimated value of P86 million.

The containers were apprehended on March 15 following derogatory reports from BOC’s Intelligence Group and Enforcement Group that the containers declared to contain slipper outsoles and styrene butadiene rubber are suspected to carry refined sugar instead, BOC said in a statement.

BOC-Subic district collector Maritess Martin then issued pre-lodgment control orders against the containers and non-intrusive examination and 100% physical examination were conducted, leading to the discovery of 15,648 bags/sacks of refined sugar.

Apart from Martin, Agriculture assistant secretary James Layug and representatives from the Sugar Regulatory Agency were also present during the physical examination.

Upon the recommendation of the customs examiner, Martin has issued Warrants of Seizure and Detention against the shipments for violation of Sugar Regulatory Administration and BOC Joint Memorandum Order No. 04-2002 dated August 16, 2002, and Section 1400 ((Misdeclaration, Misclassification, Undervaluation, in Goods Declaration), in relation to Section 1113 ((Property Subject to Seizure and Forfeiture), of Republic Act No. 10863, or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
