Bureau of Customs-Port of Clark staff assisted by officers from other enforcement agencies have foiled an attempt to smuggle eight canisters containing 35 grams of kush marijuana with an estimated value of P52,500 at Clark International Airport.
The team also arrested the consignee of the illegal shipment during a controlled delivery operation in Malabon City on September 13, BOC said in a statement.
The shipment had been declared as “goodies” and arrived in a parcel from Pennsylvania, USA. The weed, considered as a dangerous drug, was discovered after an x-ray examination of the parcel showed suspicious images, BOC said.
Suspicion that the shipment contained illegal drugs was bolstered when it was subjected to K-9 sniffing.
A physical examination of the package led to the discovery of the eight canisters containing dried buds and leaves suspected to be illegal drugs.
Samples of the shipment were sent to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) for laboratory analysis, which confirmed the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol/marijuana, a dangerous drug under Republic Act No. 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
Kush marijuana, originally grown in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan, are considered premium species of the weed. It is now cultivated clandestinely in parts of the US.
BOC-Clark district collector Alexandra Lumontad on September 8 has issued a Warrant of Seizure and Detention on the shipment for violation of various sections of R.A. 10863, or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, and R.A. No. 9165.
A controlled delivery operation was conducted on September 13 by the joint team of PDEA and BOC agents that led to the arrest of one the consignee in Malabon City.
From January 2022 to date, BOC-Clark has seized a total of P114 million worth of illegal drugs.
