BOC foils P80M gold jewelry smuggling at NAIA T2

The Bureau of Customs (BOC)-Ninoy Aquino International Airport has seized 24 kilos of assorted gold jewelry worth at least P80 million hidden in the lavatory of an aircraft that arrived from Hong Kong on November 17.

The jewelry was discovered by a BOC-Aircraft Operations Division customs boarding officer during boarding formalities on a Philippine Airlines aircraft that arrived at NAIA Terminal 2, BOC said in a statement.

BOC-NAIA district collector Carmelita Talusan has ordered a thorough investigation, including identifying persons responsible for the alleged smuggling attempt.

Talusan earlier said BOC-NAIA has seized P252.49 million worth of smuggled drugs so far this year, and has foiled other smuggling attempts of various items, including wildlife, cigarettes, medicines, among others.

BOC from January to August 23 has also seized P290 million-worth of jewelry, currency, fuel, chemicals, steel products and other items.
