The Bureau of Customs (BOC) collected a total of P134.644 million from auctions of 336 overstaying containers of assorted items within the third quarter of 2021.

The 336 containers form part of the total 814 overstaying boxes disposed off from July to September. Among the 814 are 35 containers of twine, yarn droppings, Muslim books, medical supplies, and broadcasting equipment, among others, donated to various agencies and local government units.

BOC also condemned 443 boxes holding used clothing, rotten foodstuff, used oil, and used furniture, among others.

Overstaying containers are either seized or abandoned. Cargoes overstaying for more than 30 days from the date of discharge from the vessel and not withdrawn on time will be tagged abandoned. Once abandonment is decreed final, BOC will determine the proper disposition of cargoes.

Under Section 1141 of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, goods for disposition may be donated, declared for official use by BOC, or sold in a public auction. Goods suitable for shelter or consisting of foodstuff, clothing materials, or medicines may be donated to the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

BOC said overstaying containers are disposed of to efficiently facilitate trade by eliminating port and yard congestion.

In its midterm 2021 accomplishment report, BOC said a total of 1,041 overstaying containers were disposed of in the first half of 2021. Of this, 636 boxes of assorted items were auctioned, generating revenue of P279.520 million, while 405 containers were condemned.
