Philippine customs commissioner Isidro Lapeña has denied any link to individuals using his name to extort money from importers and customs brokers.

Reports reached Lapeña that certain individuals identified as Richard “Ricky” Rebong, Ronald “Abu” Sanchez, Atty. Jimmy Patricio, “Col. Mapalo”, Teofilo “Jojo” Bacud and Col. Edgardo “Col. Divina” Divina have been duping several customs stakeholders, claiming they work under the BOC chief.

“These people are using my name to extort money. I advise the public to stop transacting with these unscrupulous individuals. Any transaction entered into by these persons will not be recognized by the BOC,” Lapeña said in a statement.

He pointed out he does not ask favor from anyone to act on his behalf and that “the public is welcome to report any cases of extortion from persons who are using my name.”

He added, “The Customs Intelligence and Investigation (Service) group will conduct further investigation on these incidents to identify the BOC employees they have connections with.”

In a follow-up statement, BOC said CIIS is still validating reports if the six individuals are receiving money in exchange for favors.

BOC is advising the public to remain vigilant against these individuals.

A month after Lapeña assumed office last year, a certain Atty. Vasquez was also reported to have been soliciting donations from importers and customs brokers in behalf of the customs commissioner. Lapeña had said this was a modus of scammers.
