The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will build a bridge connecting Cavite and Bataan starting this year, cutting travel time between the two provinces from three hours to less than an hour.

The 32-kilometer, four-lane Cavite-Bataan bridge across Manila Bay will have two large spans, one 400 meters long and the other segment stretching 900 meters, Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan said in a Malacañang press briefing. He said the project will cost P175 billion to be funded by official development assistance from the Asian Development Bank.

“And this will be a cable-stayed bridge…. And the detail engineering is now ongoing, it’s about 70% complete,” Bonoan said.

Construction of most modern long bridges involves using giant cables attached to a single or twin concrete pylon to support the main spans. As of December 2020, the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world was the 2.68-km long Jiaxing-Shaoxing Sea Bridge (Jiashao Bridge) in China.

Bonoan said the DPWH intends to start construction of the Cavite-Bataan bridge towards the latter part of this year and expects to finish the project in five years, or within the current administration’s tenure.

He said the project will connect the two growth corridors north and south of Metro Manila. “So, with this bridge… you will have better and more direct access to these two growth areas and it will significantly improve the economic development not only of Luzon but of the entire country,” Bonoan said.

“And no less than the Asian Development Bank has indicated that the economic rate of return of this bridge is more than 25% and that’s big, that’s really big.”

Bonoan earlier presented to the President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr that 1,500 kilometers of road and some 161 bridges were built and improved by the DPWH from July to December last year.
