ship yardNewbuildings continue to arrive, with Seaspan Corporation announcing it has recently accepted delivery of 10,000-TEU container ship MOL Bravo.

The vessel is the fourth of five 10,000-TEU box ships using the company’s fuel-efficient SAVER design that are scheduled for delivery in 2014.

The MOL Bravo will commence an eight-year, fixed-rate time charter with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines. (MOL). It is the first of a total of five 10,000-TEU SAVER-design vessels, and the seventh of a total of 11 vessels, to be chartered by Seaspan to MOL.

The delivery of the MOL Bravo expands the carrier’s operating fleet to 75 vessels.

The new container ship was constructed at Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding.

In June and May, Seaspan announced that it accepted the second and third 10,000-TEU SAVER-design container ships, the Hanjin Namu in May and the Hanjin Tabul last month, from Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding.

Both vessels are for chartering on a 10-year, fixed-rate basis to Hanjin Shipping.

Meanwhile, China Cosco Holdings intends to purchase five 14,000-TEU ships to rebuild its fleet after the state-owned shipping company embarked on a scrapping drive to prune its fleet of aging and inefficient vessels.

On the other hand, APL has received the 9,200-TEU Mexico City, the last of 12 newbuildings of the same size delivered by the DSME shipyard in South Korea. The newbuilding has been deployed in the G6 Asia-US East Coast CEC service.
