THE Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is spearheading a series of activities for this year’s Maritime Week (September 20-26, 2010) in coordination with public and private maritime industry stakeholders.

This year’s theme is “Maritime Industry: Onward to Global Competitiveness”.

The activities will start with a motorcade from Rizal Park to Rajah Sulayman Park followed by the blowing of ships’ horns and the Silent Drill Exhibition at both parks.

On day two, a maritime symposium with the theme “Seafaring and Family Life” will be held at the AMOSUP Convention Hall from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and an oratorical contest at the NRCO-OWWA in Intramuros, Manila.

On September 21 to 22, a job fair at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila grounds from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm will be conducted.

As in past years, the Maritime Week will feature activities promoting social and ecological awareness such as medical and dental missions, blood letting, tree planting and a coastal clean-up.

Maritime students and seafarers will have a chance to showcase their talent through the “Boses Marino Karaoke Challenge” and the poster design contest, both to be held at the LUSWELF, Rizal Park on September 23, 2010.

The celebration ends with a mass at the Manila Cathedral and a Memorial of the Sea at the Manila Bay.

Presidential Proclamation No. 1560 dated July 17, 2008 created the Maritime Week to promote maritime awareness among the public. This year’s celebrations are in conjunction with the World Maritime Day’s theme: “2010: Year of the Seafarer”.
