OOCL names latest 13,208-TEU ship, Yang Ming eyes 14,000-TEU newbuilds

OOCL Singapore VesselHong Kong shipping liner Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has christened its 10th mega box ship to be deployed on the Asia-Europe trade lanes this year.

The 13,208-TEU container ship was named OOCL Singapore in a christening ceremony at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard on Geoje Island in South Korea recently.

“With the delivery of OOCL Singapore, we have received the final vessel from our previous round of mega class newbuilding order. The makeup, cost efficiency and specifications of our fleet is one of our critical competitive advantages in the marketplace,” said Alan Tung, acting chief financial officer of mother company Orient Overseas (International) Limited.

The OOCL Singapore will be serving on the Loop 6 service of the Asia-Europe trade with a 77-day round trip.

Her port rotation is Kaohsiung, Xiamen, Shekou, Hong Kong, Singapore, Colombo, Suez Canal, Southampton, Antwerp, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Suez Canal, Jebel Ali, Singapore, Shekou, and Kaohsiung.

Meanwhile, Yang Ming Marine Transport of Taiwan is reportedly going to charter five new 14,000-TEU vessels that are scheduled for delivery between March and June 2016.

The box ships will be chartered from Seaspan and be built by CSBC Corp of Taiwan.
