International freight forwarder Kerry Logistics has started the third phase of the expansion of its Kerry Siam Seaport (KSSP), a multipurpose port located in Laem Chabang, Thailand.

Construction of the third phase of the facility has broken ground, with completion due in the fourth quarter of 2012, Hong Kong-based Kerry Logistics said in a February 8 press release.

The expansion, intended to meet growing demand at KSSP’s bulk and container terminals, involves the installation of two container rotation systems and 31 system boxes for bulk loading.

KSSP will also add two 150 meter-long berths that are also expected to be completed by September 2012. Once completed, KSSP will have 10 operational berths with a total length of 1,500 meters.

“The expansion has been driven by growing demand across the bulk and box trades and the new berths will help us increase capacity and efficiency across our terminals,” said Kledchai Benjaathonsirikul, executive director for Kerry Logistics Thailand.

KSSP has been operating since 1995, starting with four conventional berths with a combined length of 720 meters. In 2011, throughput reached 6 million tonnes of bulk cargo and 160,000 20-foot container units. The total annual throughput at KSSP is targeted to exceed 7 million tonnes in 2012.
