International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) has deployed additional reach stackers at its Manila and Subic terminals in response to growing container volumes coming into and going out of Luzon.

The four new units of mobile container handling equipment are stationed at ICTSI’s flagship Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) and at the New Container Terminals 1 and 2 in Subic Bay Freeport. The Subic terminals are operated by ICTSI subsidiaries Subic Bay International Terminal Corp. and ICTSI Subic, Inc.

The new reach stackers, which ICTSI said is the first of their kind to operate in the Asia-Pacific region, bring to 27 the total number of mobile container handling equipment deployed at the MICT and Subic terminals.

This fleet of reach stackers and empty container handlers is the largest in the Philippines to date, ICTSI said in a statement.

The Gloria or Generation G reach stacker boosts productivity with its 45-ton total lift capacity, an industry best for its class, it added. It is supplied and manufactured by Kalmar, the port equipment and technology unit of Cargotec Oy of Finland.

It comes in three ECO driving modes, namely power, normal, and economy, to make it one of the most energy-efficient reach stackers in the market today, said the ICTSI statement.

Gloria also sports an automatic stop-start function to reduce emissions and increase fuel efficiency by up to 10%.

Antonio Coronel, ICTSI purchasing director, said the new equipment will contribute to improved port operations.

“We have an ambitious development strategy to become one of the world’s leading port management companies and on the same global stage, Kalmar is clearly a trusted partner,” Coronel said.

Björn Jonasson, Kalmar Asia Sales Director, said ICTSI is the first customer to specify Kalmar Gloria reach stackers in Asia and particularly so soon after their launch into the region.

“We have enjoyed considerable success in launching Gloria into other key territories and the product has now become the benchmark for reach stacker performance throughout the industry.”

MICT has an annual capacity of 4.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs)—a figure which ICTSI said continues to grow—while Subic can handle 600,000 TEUs per annum.

ICTSI is the largest port operator in the Philippines with a portfolio of 29 container terminal operations in 21 countries across six continents.
