HKIACargo throughput at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) showed strong growth in July year-over-year, rising 8.3 percent to 370,000 tonnes.

The expansion was driven mainly by transshipments, which were up 23 percent from a year ago.

During the month, cargo throughput to and from China and North America improved most significantly compared to other key regions.

C K Ng, acting chief executive officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong, said increases in passenger traffic, cargo throughput, and air traffic movements “have clearly demonstrated steady growth momentum in air traffic at HKIA.”

For the first seven months of 2014, HKIA handled 2.5 million tonnes of cargo, representing a year-over-year increase of 6.6 percent.

On a rolling 12-month basis, HKIA’s cargo volume rose 5.1 percent to 4.28 million tonnes.

Meanwhile, Cathay Pacific Services Limited (CPSL) announced it has been appointed as the handling agent for Royal Brunei Airlines’ cargo operations and documentation at Hong Kong International Airport from July onwards.

CPSL, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cathay Pacific Airways, is the operator of Cathay Pacific Cargo Terminal at HKIA.
