Harbor Star takes part in maritime crisis management seminar

HARBOR Star Shipping Services Inc last week helped conduct the first Maritime Crisis Management seminar at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza.

On the first day of the seminar, Ricardo Rodrigo P. Bella of Harbor Star Shipping Services, Inc discussed the management of marine emergencies. Commodore Luis Tuason, Jr talked about the role of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) during maritime crises; Chandran Mathavan of Titan Maritime (SEA) Pte Ltd, the parties involved in casualties; Andrew M. Crawford of Lamor Corporation, LamorSlickbar’s response to deepwater horizon oil spill; Paul Apostolis of Holman Fenwick & Willan (Hong Kong), the types of contracts; Henson Lim of Richards Hogg Lindley Phils. Inc, claims, insurance and security; and Atty. Katrina Legarda, maritime disasters and the media.

On the second day, participants witnessed a Search and Rescue/Marine Pollution Exercise (SARPOL) at the PCG Ready Force, Pier 15, South Harbor where Harbor Star and PCG showcased their joint capabilities to respond to maritime accidents.

The seminar coincided with last week’s Philippine Maritime Week celebrations.

Harbor Star offers towage, salvage, deep-sea diving, oil and chemical spill response and diving services. It has a fleet of 27 tugboats operating in major ports nationwide, including Manila, Batangas, Bataan, Davao, Dumaguete, Mauban, and Cagayan de Oro.

Previously the company worked on the refloating of the ill-fated passenger ship Superferry 14 in Bataan, the massive oil spill caused by MT Solar in Guimaras, and the retrieval of the hazardous chemical endosulfan in the capsized ferry Princess of the Stars in Romblon.
