Port_of_Portland_Terminal_6South Korea’s Hanjin Shipping, the Port of Portland’s largest container carrier, said it is terminating its service to the city beginning next month.

In a notification letter to its customers, Hanjin Shipping, which handles nearly 80 percent of the container volume at the port’s Terminal 6, said it will withdraw its services on March 9.

“Hanjin Shipping will terminate direct call service to Port of Portland on PNH (PNW-Hanjin) service lane starting with MV. Hanjin Los Angeles v.0 128E (ETA Ningbo March 9, 2015). However, we will continue to provide services to/from Portland, OR and nearby regions via rail and truck transportation to/from Seattle,” the letter, dated February 10, 2015, read.

It said the revised PNH port rotation, starting with MV. Hanjin Los Angeles, will be Ningbo, Shanghai, Pusan, Prince Rupert, Seattle, Vancouver, Pusan, Kwangyang, and Ningbo.

Hanjin has had a presence in Portland since 1993, but the company has been unhappy about the pace of work among longshore workers and announced its intention to withdraw two years ago. Last year it decided to stay but said it would review productivity and costs.

Port officials said Hanjin’s pullout will impact hundreds of jobs and businesses using the terminal, which is operated by the Philippines-based ICTSI Oregon.
