Evergreen Lively & LenientTaiwan’s Evergreen Line recently held naming ceremonies for its two newest L-type container vessels, each with a capacity of 8,452 TEUs (20-foot-equivalent units), in a shipyard in Korea.

Ever Lively is the 16th in the series to be built by shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries for the carrier, while Ever Lenient became the seventeenth.

Both newbuilds are part of an ongoing fleet renewal program designed to improve fuel efficiency, said Bronson Hsieh, Evergreen’s second vice group chairman, in his speech at the event.

“We believe that the delivery of Ever Lively, Ever Lenient and other newbuildings to come will continue to improve the competitiveness of our operating fleet in the global shipping market.”

The two box ships, owned by Evergreen Marine (Singapore) and Evergreen Marine (UK), respectively, each measure 334.8 meters long, 45.8 meters wide, and 14.2 meters deep, with cruise speeds of up to 24.5 knots.

Both will be delivered in February and join Evergreen Line’s Far East-Middle East route.

The carrier’s fleet modernization program, began in 2010, entailed ordering 30 L-type vessels and chartering five 8,800-TEU ships and 10 13,800 teu units. The company also recently signed agreements to charter 10 14,000-TEU vessels.

The newbuildings will replace existing units and be balanced by the redelivery of currently chartered ships when their charter periods expire, said the company.
