Cebu port cargo throughput up 5% in 2013

Cebu port’s cargo volume advanced 5.39% to 30.584 million metric tons (mmt) in 2013 from 29.021 mmt of the previous year, according to latest data from the Cebu Port Authority (CPA).

Domestic cargoes accounted for 22.181 mmt of the total, 4.85% greater than the 21.155 mmt handled in 2012.

Foreign cargoes showed an even bigger improvement, growing to 8.403 mmt from 7.866 mmt, or an increase of 6.83%.

Domestic transshipments represented 50,194.27 metric tons of the total.

Cebu port handled 637,629.75 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) for the whole of last year, up 0.94% from the 631,667 TEUs recorded in 2012

Domestic containers contributed 391,779.75 TEUs, a slight improvement of 0.64% from 389,289.25 TEUs in 2012.

Foreign containers rose 1.02% to 245,850 TEUs from 243,377.75 TEUs.

Of the total container throughput, transshipment cargoes accounted for 6,414.5 TEUs,

Shipcalls totaled 112,092 in 2013, 11.93% more than the 100,146 posted in 2012.

More passengers also used the port with a 5.44% year-on-year increase to 17.088 million from 16.206 million.

The Cebu International Port recently opened its Terminal 1 building and plans to transfer its container port to a new location.

CPA general manager Edmund Tan earlier said the port is congested, handling more than its intended capacity of 250,000 TEUs per annum.— Roumina Pablo
