THERE was a reshuffle of sorts at the Bureau of Customs (BOC) over the weekend with President Benigno Aquino III appointing Atty Peter Manzano as acting deputy commissioner for revenue collection and monitoring.

Manzano, who will also head the Run After the Smugglers program, replaced Atty Gregorio Chavez who will now be the deputy commissioner for assessment and operations but also in an acting capacity.

Manzano completed his law degree at the St. Louis University in Baguio City and was previously a special counsel for the Marcos Ochoa Serapio and Tan law firm.

Chavez replaced Atty Reynaldo Nicolas.

Two depcoms?

There is talk at the BOC, however, that a potential conflict may be in the offing with two deputy commissioners for assessment and operations at the bureau. It seems Nicolas was able to get papers from the previous administration securing his position at the BOC.

PortCalls could not reach Nicolas for comment.

In an earlier report, Nicolas said the appointment of a new deputy commissioner for operations will not come as a surprise because he has been hearing news of his replacement even before the new administration assumed office.
